Yo-yos and spinning tops, as well as other spinning toys, are a great way to introduce your students to their Force & Motion Unit. Friction, Gravity, Levers, Planes of Spin, Gyroscopic Stability, Distribution of Mass, Rotational Inertia, Potential & Kinetic Energy....it's all there.
Offerings include:
Cost: FREE
Time: 1-2 hours
Topic: Force & Motion
Concepts: Rotational Inertia, Friction, Gravity, Levers, Planes of Spin, Distribution of Mass, and Potential & Kinetic Energy.
This academic In-Service consists of a short demonstration of the spinning skill arts of yo-yo, top spinning and diabolo, with a brief introduction about how these items can teach the physics of spin to students in a fun and exciting way.
Val then demonstrates how, without being highly proficient with the yo-yo or spin top, you can still use these tools in the classroom to demonstrate and teach these science concepts. Other simple items such as footballs, gyroscopes and flying discs are also used in fun and interesting ways that any teacher can utilize once shown how.
This a a fun and enlightening presentation to bring science into the lives of students with items that relate to their world.
Each teacher in attendance receives a FREE yo-yo, as well as a packet of information including a full Science Curriculum that may be used in the classroom or for science project ideas.
NOTE for Middle and High School Science Requests: While all of these topics can be expounded on to the higher grade levels, the presentations offered here are not available at no charge unless elementary teachers are also in attendance.
* All Teacher Development and In-Service Presentations contain a short description of the FREE Science of Spin program available to elementary schools.
